Kearny, N.J. (March 6, 2017) - Mayor Santos would like to remind Kearny residents that the due date for filing this year's Property Tax Reimbursement Applications is June 1, 2017. Under the Property Tax Reimbursement Program, eligible senior citizens and disabled persons are reimbursed by the State for the difference between the amount of local property taxes paid in the year they became eligible and first filed for the program and the amount of property taxes paid for the reimbursement year. This is a program designed to assist senior citizens and disabled persons with limited incomes.
Property Tax Reimbursement (Senior Freeze) Program Filing Deadline Is June 1, 2017
Mayor Santos encourages all Kearny residents, who may be eligible, to apply to these programs. To qualify for the reimbursement of any increase in property taxes paid in the year 2016, an applicant must be age 65 or older or receiving Federal Social Security disability benefits as of December 31, 2015. The applicant must have lived in New Jersey continuously since before December 31, 2005 and owned and lived in his/her home since before December 31, 2012. The total annual income in 2016 must be less than $87,007. An application must be filed each year to receive the reimbursement.
