Renovated Tappan Street Playground is Re-Opened

Mayor Alberto G. Santos, the Town Council and members of the Recreation Commission formally reopened Tappan Playground, located in Kearny on Tappan Street near Davis Avenue. Tappan Playground is the latest Kearny park to be updated and modernized. The 10,000 square foot or 0.23 acre park includes a decorative gazebo and two play structures for children ages 3 to 5 and 5 to 12 years old.

Mayor Santos announces upcoming Civil Service exam for Municipal Police Officer

Mayor Santos would like to inform interested residents that exam applications for the civil service position of police officer in the Town of Kearny are now available. Residents can pick up applications in the Personnel Office at 410 Kearny Avenue or obtain an application online at www.state.nj.us/cscp/public_safety. The application fee is $35.00.

Live Broadcast of Public Council Meetings on FIOS Television Outlet

The Mayor and Town Council have agreed to broadcast public Council meetings live on Channel 39, an outlet available to subscribers of Verizon’s FIOS television service. The first meeting aired live is scheduled for Tuesday, March 9, 2010, at 7 p.m. A schedule of regular public meetings of the Mayor and Council for 2010 is available on the Town’s web site, www.kearnynj.org.

Letter from Mayor Santos to Kearny Property Tax Payers Regarding the 1st and 2nd Installment 2010 Tax Bills

Taxes for the first quarter are due by February 10, 2010. After February 10th, interest will be charged on delinquent amounts calculated from February 1st. The Tax Collector’s Office, located in the Town Hall at 402 Kearny Ave. will be open until 7:00 pm on February 9th. Taxes for the second quarter are due by May 10, 2010. After May 10th, interest will be charged on delinquent amounts calculated from May 1st. The Tax Collector’s Office will be open until 7:00 pm on May 6th.

Kearny’s Inauguration Ceremony – January 4, 2010

The Town of Kearny hosted an inauguration ceremony at Town Hall on January 4, 2010. Alberto G. Santos was sworn in as Mayor. Alexa C. Arce, Albino Cardoso, Madeline Peyko, Carol Jean Doyle and Michael Landy were sworn in as Members of the Council. The ceremony’s highlights included musical performances by the Kearny High School singing group the K-Birds and Francis Raftery, a bagpipe player.

Holiday Celebration and Tree Lighting at Kearny Town Hall

Town Hall Park was filled with holiday cheer as hundreds of residents attended Kearny’s annual tree lighting festival on December 4, 2009. In addition to a visit from Santa, the event featured performances by the Kearny High School Wind Ensemble, the Washington School Dream Team, Mater Dei Academy Drama Club, Mater Dei Academy Children's Choir and Stonehenge, a local band.
